Native sunflowers are found growing all over the world except Antarctica. They favor temperate areas and higher elevations of tropical climates.
Sunflowers were grown as food 4,000 to 5,000 years ago in the eastern region of the United States. It is debated whether American Indians were cultivating them first and then transported to Mexico or vice versa.
From Mexico it is believed that European explorers took seeds to Europe and Russia, and cultivation practices to produce large sunflowers were developed there.
