How to Grow Dwarf Sunflowers

Sunflowers make nice additions to a flower bouquet. Most sunflowers grow up to 8 feet tall and are difficult to add to a bouquet. However, dwarf sunflowers are most often grown for this purpose, growing only to a height of 2 feet. This flower ranges from 3 to 6 inches in diameter. Dwarf sunflowers are enjoyed earlier than the taller varieties of sunflower because they grow quicker -- and they may bloom as early as spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Select an area with well-drained soil that gets at least six hours of sun a day to grow your dwarf sunflowers. Wait until after the last frost to begin planting.

    • 2

Mix 5-10-10 fertilizer into the soil evenly. Till the soil and add compost to a depth of 4 to 6 inches.

    • 3

Plant your sunflower seeds at a depth of ½ inch. Space each sunflower plant 6 inches apart.

    • 4

Add enough water to dampen the soil. Apply the water directly to the soil to avoid getting the leaves wet. Cut your flowers once the flowers reach the size you desire if you plan to use them in a bouquet.
