Instructions

    • 1

Cultivate the sunny growing area as soon as the final spring frost occurs. Work the soil down to a depth of at least 6 inches with the garden spade. Add 4 to 5 inches of aged compost to the soil, and cultivate the mediums to mix them thoroughly. Rake the growing area to level it.

    • 2

Plant groups of about five seeds approximately 18 inches apart along rows. Space the rows 2 feet apart. Cover the seeds with 1 inch of soil and water to saturate the soil. Keep the soil evenly moist to encourage quick germination.

    • 3

Remove the weakest one or two seedlings when they grow to 3 inches high. Remove the next weakest seedling when it reaches 12 inches high. Remove the weaker of the two remaining seedlings when they are about 24 inches high. This should leave the strongest seedlings growing about 18 to 24 inches apart -- one of the most important details for growing bigger sunflowers.

Mix the fertilizer with water according to package recommendations. Pour the fertilizer onto the soil around the sunflowers once each week to provide a steady supply of nutrients.
