Thin-Leaved Sunflower Information

The helianthus decapetalus, also known as the thin-leaf or ten-petal sunflower, is a wildflower that mostly grows in eastern and central North America. It can be found as far north as Quebec, Canada, as far south as Louisiana and as far west as Oklahoma. The thin-leaf sunflower has a smaller seed head than a traditional sunflower and can grow between three to five feet tall with leaves that can grow up to seven inches long and three inches across.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for thin-leaf sunflowers in open woodlands, savannas, shady areas along riverbanks, meadows and thickets.

    • 2

Find thin-leaf sunflowers in areas with partial sunshine, in soil with a moderate amount of moisture and in dirt that has a high loam concentration.

    • 3

Look for thin-leaf sunflowers to bloom in mid-summer to early fall, depending on how far south you go. Expect the blooming period to last for anywhere from five to seven weeks.

    • 4

Identify thin-leaf sunflowers by the teeth found on the outer edges of their leaves, which are long and pointed, with tips that are long and slender.
