How to Know When to Plant Sunflowers

Sunflowers are hearty plants that grow in direct sunshine through the summer months. They come in many varieties and can grow between 10 inches and 20 feet high. If planted at the right times, sunflowers can bring vitality to a garden and seeds for the table or the birds.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a local garden supply store and pick out the variety of sunflower seed that will be planted. The amount of space you have in your garden will determine the type of seed you should plant.

    • 2

Check the back of the sunflower seed packet for recommended planting dates. Most packets have a color coded map on the back that will give you this information. Planting dates will vary depending on the variety and the region in which they will be planted.

    • 3

Find out what the last spring frost dates are for the region where the sunflower seeds will be planted. This can be done by checking the Farmer's Almanac or by calling the county extension office in the area for information on previous year's growing seasons.

    • 4

Prepare to plant sunflowers at several intervals throughout the growing season. Leave space in your garden area for at least two separate plantings.
