If cut properly and at the right time, sunflowers will live longer in a vase of water and give color to your home, porch or office.
Decide which sunflowers will be cut. Choose flowers with fully-opened petals or those that are just about to bloom. They'll last longer indoors.
Hold the stem of the plant just below the flowerhead with one hand to balance it.
With the pruning shears, cut the stem at a 45-degree angle anywhere between 1 to 1 1/2 feet from the flowerhead.
Immediately place the cut flowers in a vase containing water.
