How to Grow Sunflowers in Spring

Spring is the time when most of want to start planting our flowers, fruits and vegetables. Sunflowers, are some of the most beautiful flowers around and this article provides some basic tips on planting and growing these wonderful flowers in your gardens.

      Sunflowers, as their name suggests love the sun. They are fairly easy to grow and are an inexpensive way to decorate your gardens for the spring, summer and early fall. Sunflowers should be planted in full sun, in a location where they are not hindering other plants. They should be separated from potatoes and pole beans. It is easiest to sow seeds directly into the soil after all danger of spring frost is past, preferably in late spring or if you prefer , you can plant them inside to get a head start. Sunflowers can take a chill or two so don't worry if the temperature drops a bit.

      They do fine in soils that are slightly acidic to somewhat alkaline (pH 6.0 to 7.5). The seeds should be planted 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart. Water well after planting and keep fairly moist until the seeds sprout. they usually sprout in 7 to 10 days.

      When first true leaves appear, thin plants to about 2 feet apart. Depending on the variety, sunflowers will mature and develop seeds in 80 to 120 days. If you notice birds or other animals bothering the little seedlings you can use a milk jug with the top and bottom cut off or something similar to protect them.

      There are various types of sunflowers; you have the teddy Bear, ring of fire, claret, ever sun, Giant Sungold, Organic Mammoth, Italian White, Music Box, Autumn Mix, Paul Bunyan Hybrid, Aztec Gold Hybrid and other large varieties.
