Houseplants That Do Not Need Sunlight

Light is one of the most important elements for the healthy growth of houseplants. Houseplants are grouped according to their low, medium or high requirement for sunlight. Some amount of light is required by all plants since it is the source of energy plants need to photosynthesize or make food. There are however some plants which do not need sunlight for optimal growth and tend to thrive in low light areas of the house.

  1. Cast Iron Plant

    • Cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior) is a native plant of China and thrives without sunlight in low light conditions. Cast iron plant is hardy enough to tolerate infrequent watering and high heat. The plant grows up to 3 feet in height and has a moderate water and humidity requirement. Cast iron plant adapts easily to temperature fluctuations in the range of 50 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant in an all-purpose soil and divide in early spring if plant gets overcrowded. The plant has glossy, dark green, 24-inch long leaves and a slow growth rate.

    Corn Plant

    • Corn plant (Dracaena fragrans Massangeana) is a native of tropical East Africa and among the minimal care houseplants which do not need sunlight in order to thrive. The plant has a tree-like shape with dark green, 2-feet long, arching, sword-shaped foliage with a cream stripe down the center. Corn plant has a slow growth rate and can grow up to 6 feet high. The plant does well in any good quality potting soil. Apply diluted liquid fertilizer every month from spring to fall. Water enough to keep soil moist but not soggy.

    Devil's Ivy

    • Devil's ivy (Epipreminum aureum) is a native plant of the Solomon Island and is also referred to as golden pothos. The hardy plant thrives well in low light and does not need sunlight to grow well. Devil's ivy has long trailing stems with glossy, yellow or white variegated, heart-shaped foliage. The plant has aerial roots and can be trained up trellises and moss sticks, and the vines can grow up to 8 feet or more in length. Devil's ivy grows well in well-drained potting mix and prefers indoor temperatures of 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant is easy to propagate with stem cuttings inserted in water.
