How to Grow Strawberries in a Stand

Strawberry plants produce sweet-tasting fruit during the summer on short-lived perennial plants. There are three main types of strawberries -- June-bearing, everbearing and day neutral. The June-bearing strawberries produce a large crop of berries in a short period of time. The everbearing strawberry will have two flushes of berries per season. The day neutral strawberry plant will produce berries throughout the summer. Strawberries grow on aboveground, creeping stems. When grown in pots or stands, the strawberry's stems will dangle from the pot and produce berries on the hanging clusters.

  Fill your pot with potting soil. The pot should be at least 1 foot across and 8 inches deep. If there is a hole in the bottom of the pot, place a few pieces of pot shards or gravel over the hole to prevent the soil from escaping.

  Dig a hole about the size of your strawberry plant in the center of the pot.

  Place the strawberry plant into the hole so that the dirt is at the same level that it reached previously. Press the soil down around the strawberry plant, ensuring that you cover the roots with dirt. Lightly brush any dirt off the leaves or the crown of the strawberry plant.

  Water the plant well but do not fertilize the strawberry plant at this time. Water the strawberry plants regularly and fertilize only after the plant has bloomed with a slow-release organic fertilizer once per month. Use a 1-2-1 ratio fertilizer.

  Place the container in its stand. Having the container elevated off the ground will reduce insect pests and allow the strawberry to grow further. Place the stand in the full sun on a flat, even surface.

  Replace your strawberry plants every two to three years.
