How to Fertilize Everbearing Strawberries

Everbearing strawberries provide two crops of berries in the summer -- once in June and again in late summer. The plants continue to produce a small amount of berries between the early and late summer crops, earning these varieties the name everbearing. Proper fertilization is vital for continued production, since the constant growth of berries depletes nutrients and otherwise weakens the plans. Everbearing strawberries have similar nutrient needs to June-bearing and other strawberry types, but the plants are more prone to weak production compared to other varieties when they don't receive the required nutrients.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the soil prior to planting with a soil test kit from a garden center or extension office. The test determines the soil pH (acidity level) and nutrient needs of the planting site. Strawberries require a pH between 5.0 and 7.0.

    • 2

Apply any amendments, usually lime, indicated by the soil test to the bed to adjust the soil pH to the proper level. Work the amendments into the top 8 inches of soil four weeks before planting.

    • 3

Apply fertilizer at the rate recommended by the soil test or apply 4 lbs. of 10-10-10 analysis fertilizer to every 100-foot row. Apply the fertilizer when you add the lime amendment for the pH adjustment and work it into the soil with the lime.

Fertilize the strawberry plants after the first crop of berries are harvested, usually in early July. Apply 2 ½ lbs. of 10-10-10 fertilizer to every 100-foot row, sprinkling the fertilizer between the rows and 6 inches away from the plants.

    • 5

Feed established everbearing strawberry beds each spring when new growth begins to show. Apply 2 ½ lbs. of fertilizer to each 100-foot row of plants.
