Purchase healthy, small strawberry plants, with root balls no more than two inches across. Staff at your local nursery can help you select plant varieties most suited to your area.
Select premium, peat-based potting soil. Mix in five cups each of sand and perlite. This helps strawberry plants get off to the best start.
Fill the upside-down planter with soil mix up to the level of the lowest growing ports. Do not pour soil directly out of the bag into the planter, use a small hand shovel or plastic cup to gently fill the container.
Insert the strawberry plant's root ball from the outside into the growing port. Be very gentle, as the plant can easily be injured. Fill each of the bottom ports in this manner.
Scoop in more potting mix to cover the lower plant's roots, and bring the soil level up to just below the middle level of growing ports.
Plant strawberries in the middle level, following the same method as above. Gently fill with potting soil to just below the upper planting ports. Repeat for the upper level.
Fill the planted Topsy Turvy container with soil, leaving two inches of space below the top of the planter. Place lid on securely.
Drill a hole in solid wood, and securely screw in the hook that was included with the planter. Hang your upside-down planter in a spot receiving full sun for at least eight hours per day.
Water your planter, pouring water very slowly. You will need approximately one gallon of water for the first watering. Daily watering is crucial for strawberries grown in the Topsy Turvy container.
Fertilize with a water-soluble, quick-absorb plant food according to package directions.
Pick strawberries gently as they ripen. Solid red color will indicate a berry ready to be picked and eaten.
