How to Raise Potted Strawberries Inside

The National Gardening Association, or NGA, recommends that if you want to grow strawberries, you do it outdoors -- this does not mean, however, that growing them inside is impossible. The only reason the NGA recommends against it is that strawberries require plenty of sunshine to grow, so if you plan to grow potted strawberries inside, you must simply find an area where they will get the natural light they need. Once you have picked out a suitable spot, you can make plans to grow your sweet fruit indoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a place in your home for your strawberries to grow. Since the pot or box you'll plant them in has drainage holes at the bottom, place them in a leak-proof tray from which you can empty drained water.

    • 2

Layer the bottom of your pot with 1 inch of gravel to assist with draining.

    • 3

Fill your pot 1/2 to 2/3 full of organic compost or potting soil. The soil should be a mixture of soil and a moisture retainer, like hydroponic balls or peat moss.

    • 4

Massage the roots of your strawberry starts to encourage them to spread out after you plant them.

    • 5

Place the starts in your pot and fill in the rest of the pot with soil or compost. Water the plants and leave them in full sunlight. Because of the heat and sunlight they absorb, you must water the plants regularly so that the soil stays consistently moist.
