How to Grow Organic Strawberries in a Greenhouse

Greenhouses are glass or plastic structures that provide magnified sunlight and protection from extreme temperatures for plants that you want to grow over the winter, or for plants that want a warmer climate than yours. Strawberries can be grown from seed in a greenhouse using the existing beds already in the structure. To grow them organically, use organic seedlings that have not been genetically modified, and do not use chemical herbicides, fertilizers or pesticides.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull out all the weeds in the greenhouse bed or dig them out with a hand spade. Cover the bed with 2 inches of organic compost and turn it into the soil with the spade. Do this in fall or winter.

    • 2

Dig holes in the bed that are as wide and deep as the root ball of the seedlings. Use seedlings that are most resistant to disease, since you will not be using chemicals. Lower the seedling into the hole up to the crown of the plant, and firm the soil around the roots with your hands. Space the plants 18 inches apart.

    • 3

Water the plants until the soil settles, and continue watering frequently enough to keep the soil damp but not soggy. Cover the soil around the seedlings with 1 inch of organic pine needles, which will act as a mulch and will also raise the acidity of the soil, which strawberries like.

    • 4

Remove any seedlings that are not growing well in the spring because they may have a virus. Remove any dead leaves from the plants, and cut back any runners that form.

    • 5

Cut the plants back to 4 inches once harvest season is over. Remove the mulch. Keep the soil watered, but allow it to dry out between waterings. This will keep the roots healthy until the next growing season.
