How to Grow Strawberries in Pyramids

Grow strawberries on a deck or patio by going up instead of out. A strawberry pyramid planter takes advantage of vertical space when garden areas are limited. Pyramid planters come in square or round designs. The planter consists of multiple tiers starting with the largest one on the bottom. Select strawberry pyramid planters with tiers at least 8 inches wide. Grow strawberries in a pyramid planter for fresh, ripe fruit right outside your door.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 2 parts garden soil with 1 part each peat moss and coarse clean sand to create a soil mix suitable for a pyramid planter. Mix in a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer to the soil mix. Consult the directions on the package label to determine how much fertilizer for the amount of soil.

    • 2

Fill each tier of the strawberry pyramid planter with the soil and fertilizer mix. Add water until the soil mix is damp and feels crumbly.

    • 3

Plant the strawberries 8 inches apart in each tier. Scoop out soil at each planting site. Plant strawberries so that the base of the leaves, where they meet the root system, is level with the soil line. Spread the roots out in each hole and fill in the soil.

    • 4

Water the soil in the pyramid planter again to settle the strawberries in the soil.

    • 5

Check the soil for moisture once a day during hot weather and every two to three days during cool weather. Soak the soil in the planter when the top of the soil starts to feel dry.

    • 6

Harvest strawberries as they turn fully red on the plants. Pick the fruit as often as every day during summer when the plants are producing.

    • 7

Mulch the planter in winter to protect the plants from freezing. Wait until the soil in the planter freezes after the first hard frost, then cover each tier with 6 inches of straw. Remove the straw in spring after the last hard frost.
