How to Grow Strawberries in an Apartment

Living in a small apartment does not need to stop you growing your own fruit and vegetables. Strawberries have shallow roots, meaning they grow well in small spaces, provided they get plenty of sunlight. A hanging basket is a good option for indoor strawberry growing. Not only does it leave window sills clear, it stops the strawberries rotting by keeping them off the soil. Whether you want to make a delicious fruit smoothie or serve them with ice cream, you will soon have delicious strawberries to enjoy.

Instructions

    • 1

      Line your basket with polythene.

    • 2

Make a hole in the lining for drainage.

    • 3

Add compost to the basket, stopping just under the rim.

    • 4

Plant strawberry plants around the edge of the basket, leaving plenty of room between each plant. A 15-inch basket will accommodate four plants.

    • 5

Hang your basket in a south-facing window that gets plenty of full sunlight.

    • 6

Rotate your basket throughout the day, so that the plants on all sides benefit from equal amounts of sunlight.

    • 7

Water your strawberry plants regularly. Never not let the soil dry out completely. Give your plants extra water just after they bear fruit.

    • 8

Fertilize your plants no more than once per month, after they have stopped flowering. Increase nitrogen levels by adding one teaspoon of coffee grinds to the soil.
