Select an area to plant Tribute strawberries that hasn’t been used for growing tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra or potatoes, since they harbor the Verticillium wilt pathogen. Find a weed-free site with full sun and well-drained soil.
Add 2 to 3 inches of compost to the planting bed. Mix this into the soil to a depth of at least 12 inches using hand tools or a mechanized tiller. Other organic matter to use includes peat moss and sawdust.
Apply a balanced-type fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, as directed. Incorporate this into the top 4 to 6 inches and then rake the planting bed level.
Plant the Tribute strawberries early in the morning or on an overcast day preventing the transplants from excessive sun exposure. Get rid of any dead foliage on the transplants and bury the plants just deep enough to cover the roots and the lower part of the crown.
Water the Tribute strawberries well after planting to settle the plants in place. Continue to supply water at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per week through irrigation or rainfall.
Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of straw mulching around the Tribute strawberries to prevent weeds. Remove weeds by hand or lightly cultivate around the plants, if mulch is not used.
Apply additional ammonium nitrate fertilizer monthly to the Tribute strawberries from June through September the first season, and then May through September, subsequently. Use a rate of 1 to 2 pounds of fertilizer for each 100-foot row. Water the plants well after fertilizing.
Pick the strawberries every few days after they ripen fully on the plants.
