How to Make My Strawberry Plant Bigger

Fragrant and attractive strawberry plants belong to the rosaceae family, which has more than 20 different main species. Their heart-shaped, ruby-colored fruits are highly desirable for both flavor and health benefits. The strawberry plant produces green, oval or teardrop-shaped leaves, some with serrated edges. Each set of three leaves, or leaflets, sprouts from hairy shoots called leafstalks. If your strawberry plant looks peaked and doesn't produce berries as it should, coax growth with basic growing techniques. Regular, consistent maintenance will guarantee bigger, fuller strawberry plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull off flowers as they appear to focus the plant's growth on the leaves, not fruit production.

    • 2

Place strawberries in full or partial sun for optimum growth. Give strawberry plants at least six hours of sunshine daily.

    • 3

Sprinkle 10-10-10 fertilizer pellets around the base of the plant in July. Water plants thoroughly, giving them 1 inch of water per week. Watering distributes fertilizer to the root base. Avoid tossing fertilizer directly on the plant.

    • 4

Weed strawberry plants regularly, also removing foreign plants and trash.
