How to Germinate Alpine Strawberries

Gardeners grow alpine strawberries for their attractive, dark green foliage and tiny but deliciously sweet fruits. It is easier to start your own alpine strawberry patch from healthy seedlings, but starting a patch from seed is very rewarding. Alpine strawberries enjoy a wide temperature range, and they thrive in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 through 9. Alpine strawberry seeds germinate readily in the cool days of early spring when temperatures reach at least 60 degrees.

Things You'll Need

  • Seed-starting container, any size
  • Seed-starting mix
  • White sand (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Freeze alpine strawberry seeds for three or four weeks before you want to plant them, if desired. The freezing temperatures help the seeds break dormancy, and this aids germination.

    • 2

Fill a container with seed-starting mix. Spread alpine strawberry seeds 1 inch apart on the surface of the mix.

    • 3

Press the seeds into the soil. Covering is unnecessary, but seeds will still germinate if covered with up to 1/8 inch of soil. Sprinkle a small bit of sand on the surface to hold the seeds down.

    • 4

Put the alpine strawberry seeds in a sunny spot, or provide powerful artificial lighting. Set the container where temperatures range between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 5

Mist the soil to keep it damp. Never let the soil dry out. Place a plastic lid over the container to keep moisture in, if desired. Seeds germinate as early as seven days after planting, though some germinate up to six weeks after planting.
