The Care of Mignonette Strawberries

Mignonette strawberries are a type of Alpine strawberries, which are similar to wild strawberries. They are hardy fruit that can survive outdoors in temperatures that fall as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit, and because they don't produce runners like some other varieties, Mignonettes can thrive in tight places, such as in containers and baskets. Mignonette strawberries can even grow well in partial shade. With proper care, Alpine Mignonette strawberries will produce small, sweet berries from spring until fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the strawberries in a container or in a shallow garden plot. Use nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. The location can be fully sunny or in partial shade.

    • 2

Add 2 inches of mulch around the plants. Mulch will help the soil maintain its moisture and discourage the growth of weeds.

    • 3

Water the plants whenever the soil gets dry. Do not water in the evening. In very hot weather, you may need to water almost every day to avoid drought damage. The plants require approximately 1 to 2 inches of water per week.

    • 4

Wait until the berries begin to form before fertilizing for the first time. Apply a kelp-based liquid fertilizer once in the spring and once in late June.

    • 5

Pick the fruit whenever you notice a ripe berry. By regularly picking the ripe fruit, the plants will continue to produce berries throughout the summer.
