How to Create a Strawberry Spiral Planter

Take advantage of a small space on your porch, balcony or deck to grow strawberries. Strawberry plants add freshness and color to their surroundings and provide a bounty of fresh, sweet fruit throughout the season. A strawberry spiral planter is simple to create using an old plastic bucket. You can construct it quickly with readily available materials and enjoy the sweetness of plump strawberries for snacking, salads and desserts.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub a food-safe 5-gallon plastic bucket thoroughly with detergent and hot water. Rinse the bucket thoroughly with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water.

    • 2

Punch 10 to 15 drainage-holes with a medium-size Phillips-head screwdriver evenly distributed over the bottom surface of the bucket.

    • 3

Draw a line with a marker from the bottom rim in a gentle spiral around the bucket to the top rim.

    • 4

Use an electric drill to bore 2-inch diameter holes spaced three to four inches apart along the spiral line from top to bottom.

    • 5

Line the interior wall and the bottom of the bucket with landscaping fabric.

    • 6

Fill the bucket with a growing media of one part each of sandy loam clay, perlite and compost.

    • 7

Cut a slit in the fabric at each hole just large enough to slip the roots of the strawberry plant through.

    • 8

Plant a strawberry plant in each hole and on the top of the soil with the growing media just covering the roots. Do not cover the crowns.
