Do Strawberry Plants Need to Be Covered?

Strawberries can be planted in the spring, and bear fruit in the early summer. If you live in a cold climate and hope to harvest berries from the same plant for another year, you will want to provide coverage to the plants.

  1. Mulch

    • Mulch can be used to protect strawberry plants during cold winter temperatures. Begin applying mulch in the winter when the ground freezes, applying between two and four inches. Rake the mulch into the space between plants in the spring around the end of March, or as soon as the leaves begin to show new growth.

    Water

    • Applying a fine mist over strawberry plants can actually prevent the plant from freezing all the way. Begin applying the mist, which can be accomplished through the use of sprinklers, when the temperature drops to 34 degrees Fahrenheit and continue it all night until the ice melts in the morning.

    Row Covers

    • Fabric row covers can be placed over the plants, creating somewhat of a greenhouse effect and preventing frost damage. Row covers can be used in late fall or early spring, and serve as a good supplement to mulch.
