Tennessee Beauty (Fragaria x ananassa Tennessee Beauty) is a June-bearing strawberry variety, which means it will produce all of its fruit for the season over the course of two to four weeks. Not as large as other June-bearing varieties, Tennessee Beauty is nevertheless bright red and juicy. This strawberry grows best in zones 3a to 8b on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Hardiness Zone Map. Get your Tennessee Beauty strawberries into the ground in early spring, as soon as the soil is workable.
Place the Tennessee Beauty's roots in a container of water to soak while you ready the planting area.
Add a 3-inch layer of compost to the soil in the planting area and mix it into the top 5 inches of soil. Rake the area smooth.
Use your hands to create 4-inch tall mounds of soil, 18 inches apart. Plant the Tennessee Beauty strawberry plants on top of the mounds. Bury the roots, but leave the crowns exposed above the soil.
Add a 2-inch layer of mulch, such as straw, around the strawberry plants. This will keep the soil moist and lift the fruit off of the soil.
Water the strawberry plants until the top 6 inches of soil is moist and provide 1 inch of water a week, if there is no rain.
Snip off all but three of the runners as the Tennessee Beauty strawberry plant produces them. This will cause the plants to produce more fruit.
Remove flowers during the first season that the Tennessee Beauty is in the ground. This produces a stronger plant with more berries in the second year.
