How to Dry Strawberry Seeds

Saving and drying the seeds from strawberries that you have grown to plant the next year saves money. When choosing which strawberries to save the seeds from, choose the “cream of the crop.” Pick berries from healthy plants that did not fall victim to disease and produced juicy, large berries. These traits usually influence the crop you plant with the seeds.

Things You'll Need

  • Blender
  • Paper towel
  • Plate

Instructions

    • 1

Put a handful of strawberries into your household blender to separate the seeds from the fruit. Add one cup of water.

    • 2

Turn the blender on the lowest setting and pulse for no more than five seconds. Any longer than that and you might damage the seeds.

    • 3

Allow the mixture to sit for two minutes. The viable seeds will sink to the bottom of the blender and the seeds that are not viable with float on top of the water with the pulp. Pour out the bad seeds and the fruit pulp with the water, pouring slowly so as not to disturb the seeds in the bottom.

Rinse the good seeds off, transfer them to a paper towel, and spread them out as much as possible. Place the towel on a plate and position it in the sunshine.

    • 5

Let the seeds dry. The amount of time it takes varies on the humidity and the size of the seed. You will know they are sufficiently dry when they no longer stick together.
