Strawberries can be expensive to purchase in the supermarket, but one way you can save money while still eating this delectable berry is by growing them at home. Buzzy Seeds makes a hanging basket for growing strawberry plants in small spaces. Follow the instructions for planting, and be patient, because strawberry seeds can take up to 30 days to germinate.
Open the box and spread out the pieces of the kit so they are handy while you assemble the hanging planter.
Fill a large bowl with 5 cups of water. Place the square of compressed moss in the bowl. Allow the moss to absorb water for five minutes. Squeeze out excess water from the moss. Empty and dry bowl for later use.
Pull apart the damp compressed moss and spread it on the inside of the wire basket. Moss is an excellent retainer of moisture and will help keep your strawberry seeds, and eventually plants, from drying out.
Empty the package of soil into the large bowl.
Cut or make several small holes in the soil package. These holes will serve as drainage for excess water. The bag will line the basket between the moss and the soil.
Line the inside of the basket by putting the empty soil bag on top of the moss.
Moisten the potting soil with water and put soil on the empty bag inside the basket. Fill basket until ¼ inch below the rim. Place the soil loosely; do not pack it down. Reserve some soil to cover the seeds.
Open the packet of strawberry seeds and distribute them evenly atop the soil.
Use the remaining soil to cover the seeds.
Water the seeds and soil. Do not saturate the soil completely or the seeds may rot. In order for the seeds to germinate, they need to be watered regularly and kept moist. Use a mister or watering can to help control the amount of water you use.
Place the hanging basket in a location that will receive direct sunlight for six or more hours per day. If you plant before the last frost of the season, hang the basket inside until temperatures warm.
Exercise patience during the 14 to 30 days your strawberry seeds may take to germinate. If after 30 days you do not see results, contact Buzzy Seeds to inquire about their company guarantee.
