How to Make a Strawberry Bed

Strawberry bushes like sprawling out by sending runners into the surrounding area. If left to grow wild, strawberry plants can take over a yard or garden. The best way to control your berry plants is to bed them down. A raised bed is a good way to direct growth and keep the delicious fruit centralized in one place. Beds will make weeding and fertilizing simpler, too. With proper care, you can reuse your strawberry bed year after year.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 wooden boards, 2-by-6 inches, 8 feet long
  • 2 wooden boards, 2-by-6 inches, 4 feet long
  • Hammer
  • 2-inch nails
  • Peat moss
  • Potting soil
  • Sand
  • Yard rake
  • Strawberry plants
  • Straw

Instructions

    • 1

Select a position in the yard for your strawberry bed. The location should be sunny and allow plants to have at least six hours of sun a day.

    • 2

Lay one 8-foot-long board at the top of the bed and one at the bottom of the bed. The boards should be 4 feet apart.

    • 3

Place the 4-foot boards at the sides of the bed. Use a hammer and 2-inch nails to secure all four boards together, like a rectangle. The thin side of the boards should face up toward the sun.

    • 4

Fill the rectangle with equal parts of potting soil, peat moss and sand. Use a yard rake to mix the soils together.

    • 5

Plant strawberry plants 12 inches apart. Cover the base of the plant with the soil. Water the plants and cover the soil with straw. Straw coverings will keep the soil cool, a necessary part of growing strawberries.
