Is Wiring Roses Necessary?

Owning your own home and garden invites the opportunity for growing roses. The most difficult aspect of rose gardening might be choosing which plants to grow. There are many varieties, colors, sizes and growing habits from which to choose. Some people prefer the hybrid tea roses, which grow easily in rows of bushes, or tucked in amongst other plants. Others like climbing roses, where wires may come into play. Typically, wiring is only needed for arranging.
  1. Hybrid Teas

    • Roses come in many varieties and colors.

Hybrid teas are a very common flower all across the world. Many carry sweet fragrances, and their form appeals to growers, florists and consumers alike. Formal gardens feature hybrid teas. Find them at most quality nurseries. These thorny shrubs or bushes are sturdy and easily grow in upright form, and do not require support of any kind. Wiring is not necessary.

    Other Varieties

    • Roses come in varieties including the floribunda, grandiflora, miniature and tree roses. Antique roses, such as the damask, musk and moss, can also available. In their natural growing condition where good soil and proper care are given, these roses grow without wiring. The exceptions are the climbing rose or in the early stages of training a tree rose.

    Training Climbers

    • Train roses on trellises or supports.

When left alone, the climbing rose varieties overtake large areas of land and completely enclose a home or property. If there's nothing to stop them, they take over. Most rose lovers and gardeners working with climbers shape them on trellises or use the espalier style. Encourage climbing roses to grow by lightly attaching string, twine or wire to tie the reaching branches against a section of support until it attaches fully and continues spreading. In this situation, tight wiring is discouraged as it damages the branches

    Roses in Floral Design

    • Some florists use floral wire when working with roses.

Floral design is the primary area where wiring roses is in regular use. Some florists use wires cut to about the length of a rose's stem helping support it in certain arrangements. Although wiring is not always necessary, it is quite common and extends the shape and appearance of a bouquet, centerpiece or other design. Creative florists use different types of wire making water sculptures using roses, too. Purchase inexpensive floral wire and make your own arrangements using roses from your garden.
