How to Prune With Orange Shellac Sealant

Orange shellac is a product used in pruning. It seals the cuts you make on the plant and can prevent insects or serious infections from infesting your plant. Orange shellac is a simple product that is readily available at home and garden supply stores. It is important to note that improper pruning is dangerous to your plant, even with the use of shellac, so be careful to prune only as much as necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you need to prune. Generally, you would prune any dead branches or prune to control growth.

    • 2

Cut the branches at a 45-degree angle. If you're trimming a rose bush or other flowering shrub, cut 1/4 inch above the uppermost outward-facing bud.

    • 3

Seal the cut with orange shellac to prevent insects or infection from attacking the plant. You can use a spray can of orange shellac, but those are not always readily available at home-improvement stores. Also, if your spraying technique is not correct, peeling can occur where the plant was cut. For that reason, it is generally preferred that you use a can of orange shellac and apply the substance with a paint brush.
