How to Get Tangerine Colored Roses to Grow

Rose cultivars like Tangerine Twist charm gardeners with their orange-tinted blooms and vigorous growth habit. Their growth often slows when the soil becomes depleted, or when exposed to less-than-ideal light and moisture conditions. Altering conditions around the rose is the most reliable means of promoting active growth. It is best to make the changes in early spring, so that the rose has time to slowly acclimate to the changes while emerging from its winter dormancy.

Instructions

    • 1

Pruning overhanging shrubbery or plant life increases the sunlight available to the rose. Cut back the shrubs or plants using pruning shears. Remove only enough growth that increases the sunlight around the rose, but not so much as to harm the plants you are pruning.

    • 2

Prune back the tangerine rose by half to promote a flush of fuller, bushier growth. Make the cut straight across just above a set of leaves. Do not remove more than half the length from each branch since the rose takes on a scraggly appearance if too much is removed.

    • 3

Spreading a 2-inch-thick layer of mulch around the rose’s base helps hold moisture around the roots. Leaving a 6-inch radius around the trunk free from mulch allows for evaporation and more efficiently directs water toward the roots.

    • 4

Feed the rose every six weeks after the last hard frost in the spring. Apply a high-phosphorus, 4-12-4 fertilizer around the plant’s base according to the manufacturer's directions. Watering the rose thoroughly after feeding helps distribute the fertilizer deep into the soil.

    • 5

Water the rose deeply whenever the soil feels dry in the top inch or two. Run a hose at the rose’s base until the soil feels moist at a depth of 3 inches. Always let the top inch of soil dry out before watering again. Avoid getting moisture on the leaves, as that opens the plant up to fungal infections.

    • 6

Perform a light pruning on the tangerine rose in autumn removing any root suckers, crossed branches and damaged growth. Do not prune any healthy branches, since that opens the plant to fungal infections during the cool, wet winter months.
