How to Prune George Burns Roses

The George Burns rose was bred by noted rose breeder Tom Carruth. Because it is a type of floribunda rose, it's classified as a modern garden rose. Blooming in flushes throughout spring and summer, George Burns bears yellow flowers with stripes of red, pink and cream. It makes a wonderful cut rose and has a strong, fruitlike scent. The flowers are large and, like all floribundas, they bloom in clusters. George Burns is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3b through 10b. Prune it in the spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut all canes and stems to the desired height. You can safely cut George Burns' main canes to 12 inches from the soil.

    • 2

Remove at least one-third of the stems from the interior of the bush. Cut these back to a main cane.

    • 3

Prune out dead, damaged and spindly growth back to a main cane on the George Burns rose.

    • 4

Cut off thick, old canes flush with the bud union, being careful not to cut into it.
