The Best All Summer Blooming Climbing Roses

Roses which climb fences, trellises, arbors and pergolas create a charming and often bloom-rich vertical landscape focus. Many varieties of climbing roses are summer-bloomers -- also called repeat bloomers, because they flower repeatedly and most frequently, from early summer to fall. They bloom in many colors from yellow and reds to whites and pinks and in all sizes from small to large. The best summer, ever-blooming climbers, have lush, prolific and multi-petaled flowers.

  1. Rose Hall of Fame Climbers

    • The New Dawn rose.

      The two climbing roses that are among 14 roses voted into the Rose Hall of Fame by members of the World Federation of Rose Societies are Pierre de Ronsard and New Dawn. Pierre de Ronsard, also called Climbing Eden, has large, beautifully formed, double flowers, with deep-pink center petals and cream-colored outer ones. It's highly fragrant and grows to 12 feet. New Dawn, a profuse bloomer with light-pink flowers 2 to 3 inches in diameter, is also pleasant smelling. Its petals gradually turn white.

    Don Juan

    • The Don Juan climbing rose

      Don Juan climbers -- with deep-red, velvet-like flowers framed with dark-green leaves -- appear on many lists of best climbing roses. The blooms repeat frequently through the summer and fall in small clusters of usually three blooms or as single blossoms. Don Juan emits a strong fragrance and grows to heights of 14 feet.

    Golden Showers

    • Blooms on Golden Showers open a bright yellow and fade to cream.

      Golden Showers, another of the best climbing roses, first blooms in late spring or early summer. Roses open with yellow petals that gradually fade to cream. The lightly fragrant flowers bloom in semi-double form -- or with numerous petals -- and have diameters of 3 to 4 inches. The compact blooms become more open as they age. Golden Showers grows to heights of 10 feet.

    Joseph's Coat

    • As Joseph's Coat ages, the red buds become yellow blossoms edged in red.

      One of the best multi-colored rose climbers is Joseph's Coat. It blooms with a profusion of changing colors. The red buds open to semi-double yellow roses, which are edged in pink or red. As blossoms age, petals become orange and then red. A highly thorny climber, it grows to heights of 12 feet.

    Iceberg

    • Iceberg climbers grow double-white roses.

      One of the best white climbing roses is Iceberg. In spring it blooms with profuse, double, white flowers that are 2 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter. Then, through summer and fall, it repeatedly blooms. Flowers are dotted with yellow stamens (male reproductive parts). The foliage is a medium green and Iceberg emits a fragrance that is slightly spicy. It reaches heights of 15 feet.
