Do Miniature Roses Grow in the Shade?

Miniature roses are meant to be planted outdoors. Although you can grow them in pots, they generally fare better when they're outside instead of indoors. This is because miniature roses need a certain amount of direct sunlight a day to grow and develop. While certain varieties are fairly shade tolerant, don't expect them to grow in entirely shaded locations.

  1. About

    • Miniature roses, also known as dwarf roses, are a variety of rose. Despite their name, miniature roses are available in various shapes and sizes -- some growing to a mature height of 5 feet. Depending on the variety, they have bloom sizes ranging from 1/4 inch to 2 inches, and the blooms take on different forms, such as semi-double, single-petalled and heavily-petalled. Miniature roses have several different bloom shades, including yellow, white, pink, purple, red, burgundy and orange. They typically bloom repeatedly from spring to early fall.

    Light Requirements

    • Miniature roses, like most rose varieties, require at least five hours of daily sun. However, certain types of miniature, climbing and shrub roses can tolerate partial shade, but no roses, miniature or otherwise, can bloom in full shade. Sunlight helps roses bloom, so the less exposure they have to sun, the less flowers they produce. Lack of sunlight also causes their branches to lengthen, which results in unevenly spaced leaves. Black jack, a deep red almost black miniature rose, can tolerate less sun than other roses, but still needs four to five hours per day to thrive.

    Selecting Miniature Roses

    • Planting miniature roses, such as the light peach colored apricot princess rose, in partial shade can actually make the flowers pop with color. Light colored blossoms, such as pale pinks, oranges, purples and yellows, appear better in partial shade than full sunlight, which tends to drown them out. Select pastel miniature roses for planting in more shaded areas of your yard or garden.

    Considerations

    • Always purchase miniature roses from a reputable nursery. Before you transplant your rose bush outdoors, place its container in a shaded area for about three days, especially if it was started in a greenhouse. Slowly introduce them to sunlight over the course of the following two weeks to acclimate them to their new environment. Even a modest amount of sun exposure, when introduced too quickly, can shock the plant and cause it to die prematurely.
