Name for Rose Oil

A member of the plant family Roseacea, genus Rosa, roses are hardy perennial plants cultivated for the beauty and properties of the flower. One of the most widely used essential oils in perfumery or aromatherapy, rose essential oil, also known as rose otto or attar of rose, is obtained by steam distillation of the petals of the rose. Rose absolute is another type of rose essence derived by solvent extraction of oil from rose petals. Rose absolute is the base scent for a diverse array of cosmetic products and is the preferred form of rose scent in the perfume industry.

  1. Description

    • The scent of rose is sweet and floral.

Light yellow to light green, oil of rose exhibits a pungent odor of fresh cut roses. Therapeutic grade rose essential oil is the purest, natural form of rose oil. Around the world, more than 15,000 different species, varieties and hybrids of roses are found in home gardens, urban landscapes and commercial cultivation. The two main species of roses cultivated for rose oil include Rosa centifolia, also known as the cabbage rose and Rosa damascena, commonly called the damask rose. The delicate rose petals are gathered at sunrise and distillation occurs the same day. The majority of commercial rose essential oil production occurs in Turkey, Bulgaria, India, Pakistan, Iran, China, France and Egypt. Because of the intense amount of labor required for the cultivation, harvesting and processing of rose petals, pure and natural, therapeutic grade rose essential oil is quite expensive.

For centuries, rose oil has been valued for its healing qualities. Rose essential oil is still widely used in Eastern Asian cultures. Traditionally rose oil has been used to treat sexual disabilities, frigidity, herpes, skin disease, ulcers, wrinkles, wounds, impotence and infection. Rest and relax in a skin soothing warm bath. Add six to eight drops of rose essential oil, one cup dairy cream, a half cup organic honey and 2 oz. grapeseed oil to warm water, mixing well. Soak for 20 minutes. Allow skin to air dry. The healing soak will relieve the discomfort of insect bites, chapped or dry skin and sunburn.

    Storage
