How to Grow Snow Cone Rose Shrubs

Snow cone roses grow in shrub form and reach up to 3 feet tall and wide at full maturity. The plant thrives in United States Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 6 through 9 and in zone 5 with heavy winter protection. The flowers are smaller than standard roses and appear in a white or cream color. The snow cone rose is a repeat bloomer that begins in spring and continues until fall if cared for properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel
  • Mulch
  • Water
  • Organic liquid fertilizer
  • 10-10-10 or 5-10-5 granular fertilizer
  • Hand pruners or loppers
  • Gardening gloves

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the spring when the threat of frost is over and choose a location with full sunlight and well-draining soil. The composition of the soil should ideally be dark, rich loam, but the snow cone rose tolerates any mixture of soil.

    • 2

Dig a hole in the location that is only as deep as the roots of the rose. The entire upper stem must be above the surface of the soil. Fill in the hole with soil and pack it down lightly.

    • 3

Spread a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the snow cone rose to prevent soil moisture from evaporating.

    • 4

Water the soil until it is damp to the same depth as the roots of the rose. Afterward, water once or twice per week to keep the soil constantly moist but never soggy.

    • 5

Apply a liquid organic fertilizer to the soil as soon as you see new green coloring on the snow cone rose. Use only the amount indicated on the bottle. In the second and subsequent years, apply a granular 10-10-10 or 5-10-5 fertilizer in the spring by spreading it out on the ground to the length of the longest canes.

Wait until eh late winter to prune the snow cone roses. Locate any stems that are brown or gray indiating they are dead, and cut htem back to teh ground using hand pruners. Then cut back the stems to the top of the cane 1/4 inch above an outward facing bud, using hand pruners or shears. The snow cone rose blooms on both old a dnew wood so bloomingi is ot impacted by prungin.
