The Best Mulch for Rose Bushes in Montgomery

A member of the botanical plant family Roseacea, genus Rosa, roses are hardy perennial plants that present brilliant blooms and deep green foliage. In 1996, President Reagan signed legislation that honored the rose as the National Flower of the United States. Roses require care and maintenance, including pruning and mulching. Mulching protects rose root zones from winter winds and summer heat. Montgomery, Alabama, gardeners mulch roses with different organic materials. The best choice is pine straw.

  1. Pine Straw

    • Pine straw does not wash away in heavy rains.

Readily available in Alabama and quite inexpensive, pine straw is the ideal mulch for southern roses. It is lightweight, does not attract termites and is easy to apply. Spread 1 to 2 cubic feet of pine straw around the base of each rose bush to help control weed emergence and to conserve moisture.

    Untreated Wood Chips

    • Wood chips are an attractive top dressing for under shrubs and trees.

Apply a 4- to 6-inch layer of untreated wood chips or sawdust around the base of your rose bushes. The wood mulch helps cool the soil on hot summer days, retains moisture and prevents weeds from springing up around the base of the plant. Avoid treated chips that may contain toxic chemicals that can leach into the soil and harm tender plant roots.

    Miscellaneous

    • Ground corn cobs are ideal for retaining moisture around rose bushes.

Almost any type of organic material can be used as mulch for roses. Coarsely ground peat moss, ground corn cobs, pine bark or barnyard straw can be applied. Well-aged herbivore (sheep, cow, horse, lama, goat) manure provides nitrogen and needed micro-nutrients to the soil while effectively retaining moisture and deterring weed development.
