What Is the Name of Those Striped Roses?

Striped roses go by many descriptive names, like 'Candy Stripe' or 'Peppermint Twist'. Others may include the words "variegated" or "striped" in the name. Whatever their name, striped roses are a phenomenon produced by natural or induced mutations. Roses can spontaneously mutate, or variegation can be the result of a virus. Induced mutations happen when buds, seeds or pollen are exposed to gamma rays. Roses with spontaneous and induced mutations can be pollen parents to other roses, while roses with a virus cannot. Virus-induced variegation does not happen on a genetic level like the other types, and variegation of offspring may or may not be striped.

  1. Double-Red Flowers

    • The majority of variegated roses are predominantly red. 'Moore's Striped Rugosa' is a disease resistant rose, while both 'Belle Doria' and 'Bright Ideas' are climbing roses. Some roses are blackish red or deep purple, like 'Tricolore' and 'Purple Tiger'. Some have less red than others; 'Julio Iglesias' and "Ferdinand Pichard' are only 50 percent red, for example. 'Camaieux', 'Peppermint Twist', 'Rosa Mundi' and 'Scentimental' are all excellent red variegated roses.

    Double-Pink Flowers

    • The pink and white variegated roses often have food names because they look so delicious. 'Berries and Cream', 'Candy Land' and 'Candy Stripe' all invoke memories of sweet tasting treats. 'Variegata di Bologna' is a climbing variety. "Careless Love', 'Chateau de Namur' and 'Honorine de Brabant' range in color from candy pink to mauve.

    Other Colors

    • Variegated roses aren't limited to reds, pinks or whites. Although a little less common, oranges and yellows are mixed into the palette occasionally. 'Cabana' is a deep pink flower with pale yellow striping. 'George Burns' is red with some pink and creamy yellow. 'Oranges and Lemons' is a bright semi-double orange and yellow that really stands out in a garden.

    Single Flowers

    • Some single roses have great impact because they are simple yet spectacular. Most are striped red and white or red and pink. "Fourth of July' is a red and white flower with wavy edges. 'Festival Fanfare' is orange-red with white striping. 'Rockin' Robin' and 'Jan Steen' are rose red with pink and white stripes, and 'Soaring Spirits' has lipstick pink and white flowers.

    Miniatures

    • Miniature roses may actually grow to be a good-sized shrub, but the flowers and leaves are small. 'Charlie Brown', 'Twister', 'Hudry Gurdy' and 'Stars 'n' Stripes' are red flowers with pink or white striping. 'Peppermint Parfait', and ;'Candy Cane' are pink and white, and 'Candy Cane' is also a climber. 'Double Treat' and 'Memphis Music' are red and yellow, the red of 'Memphis Music' being particularly dark and rich. 'Lifelines' is an orange and red climber.
