How Long Will Double Knock Out Roses Bloom?

The Knock Out family of roses is quickly becoming one of the most favorite rose varieties today. The Double Knock Out rose is a very popular flower from this family. It is a hybrid shrub rose that is popular for landscaping. This rose is appreciated for its large, double blooms that cover the bush.

  1. Origin

    • The Knock Out rose originated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was developed by rose breeder William Radler. By crossing the Carefree Beauty and Razzle Dazzle roses, the Knock Out was created in 1988. In 2005, Radler developed the Double Knock Out rose. This rose has a vivid red color and even larger blooms with more petals than the original Knock Out rose.

    Length of Bloom Time

    • The Double Knock Out rose will bloom freely all season long. In some areas, it may bloom for nine months out of the year. There is no need to deadhead the blooms, because new flowers will force old blooms to fall off. During the winter, the leaves and stems change from a dark red and green to a lighter red-orange.

    Characteristics

    • The blooms of this rose are bright red. As the bloom dies, the color fades. This rose grows to be up to 4 feet tall on a shrub that is about 3 to 4 feet wide. It is covered in clusters of blooms that are at least 3 inches across. It has a fragrance that is light and delicate. Because the stems are quite tall, it is not considered a good choice for cut flowers.

    Hardiness

    • The Double Knock Out rose is especially resistant to pests and diseases. It can fight off diseases like mildew and black spot easily. It is also resistant to pests, such as leaf hoppers, rose midges and fungi. This rose requires very little care.
