How to Prune Rosa Polyantha

Rosa polyantha is a variety of roses that produces small shrubs with clusters of rose blooms. The flowers are 2 inches across, and the plant reaches up to 3 feet in height. It is a low-maintenance rose bush that is appropriate for growing in containers or cooler climates. The plant requires only annual pruning to remove dead canes and keep the size of the bush compact.

Things You'll Need

  • Pruning shears

Instructions

    • 1

Cut any dead or damaged canes back to the soil. Inspect the plant for insect infestation. Remove any canes that are infested.

    • 2

Cut the remaining canes back by no more than 1/4 of the cane's total length. Make all cuts just above a leaf or flower bud. Cut all the canes of the plant to the size you desire, within the bounds of the 1/4-length rule.

    • 3

Repeat the pruning every spring, before the plant begins producing flowers. This protects the newly cut canes from frost damage.
