How to Prune the First Growth of Long-Stemmed Roses

Long-stemmed roses are hybrid tea roses that have been specially pruned to have long stems. The hybrid tea rose is the most popular kind of rose grown today, according to Clemson University. The roses have attractive flowers that bloom all season, and they come in every color except blue and black. With the proper pruning, your hybrid tea roses can be trimmed into long-stemmed roses.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the hybrid tea roses as they start to grow. You want only one bud on each stem so the roses will develop long stems.

    • 2

Find the topmost bud on each stem. This bud should also be the largest.

    • 3

Prune off all the other buds from the stem. Cut the buds off at the base of the stem as the new growth emerges. Leave only the topmost bud on the stem.
