The Rosa foetida 'persiana' is an heirloom rose reportedly cultivated around 1600 in eastern Europe and discovered in England in 1837. It is a shrub rose that blooms only once a year, but it gives a brilliant display of yellow double-blossomed roses in the early summer. Also known as the Persian Yellow rose, it is susceptible to disease and needs maintenance to keep it in good growing condition. Pruning the Persian Yellow rose at least once a year will keep it producing blooms for many years to come.
Remove all of the dead, diseased and damaged foliage from the Persian Yellow rose as it occurs during the year. Cut back the foliage 2 to 3 inches into healthy growth.
Cut out an old cane for every new cane of growth at the base of the Persian Yellow rose bush. Use the pruners.
Remove one third of last year's growth. Cut the growth before the bud union of the outer facing buds.
