How to Mulch a Rose Bush

Mulching a rose bush may sound easy, but if it isn't done properly, it could be big trouble for your rose. Mulch benefits roses by controlling weeds and conserving soil moisture. Using the correct mulch is important, as is using the correct depth. Mulch is best applied approximately one month before the roses bloom.

Things You'll Need

  • Mulch
  • Rake
  • Fertilizer
  • Collar material
  • Garden gloves (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare to mulch by clearing out all debris and old mulch from a 2-foot radius around your rose bush. Rake the soil lightly, and apply a balanced general-purpose fertilizer to the soil at the rate recommended on the label.

    • 2

Place a loose-fitting collar around the trunk of the rose bush to prevent mulch from touching the wood. Use a collar 3 to 4 inches tall, made of metal or plastic, that will stand upright and be removable.

    • 3

Spread the mulch around the trunk 3 inches deep in a 2-foot radius from the trunk. Add more mulch as needed when it begins to decompose.
