How to Cut Rose Hip Flowers

Rose hips --- the sphere-shaped fruit of the rose bush --- have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, and people make tea and jam with them as well. Rose hips tend to mature on the bush during the late summer or early fall. Although some people prefer to keep the hips on the bush to add to the natural display, you can also cut them for use in floral arrangements, or to make tea or jam with them. No matter how you plan to use the rose hips, you'll cut the flower from the bush in the same manner.

Things You'll Need

  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Scissors or clippers

Instructions

    • 1

Sterilize the blades of your scissors or clippers with isopropyl alcohol. Using sterilized equipment ensures that you don't spread disease around your garden.

    • 2

Grasp the stem with your hand. Cut the stem-like portion of the rose hip from the plant at a 45-degree angle, as close to the main stem as possible. Avoid tearing cuts, which may introduce infection to the rose bush.

    • 3

Place the cut rose hip stem in water immediately for use in floral arrangements to preserve the bloom. Or set it aside to prepare for making jam or tea.
