How to Prune Rosa palustris

Perennial swamp rose, Rosa palustris, loves a wetter-than-normal environment more than other bush roses. The large, pink blossoms appear once a year in June and July. This rose shrub can reach a height of up to 7 feet, and has curved thorns instead of straight ones like other roses. The swamp rose is low maintenance, needing only minimal pruning to keep it healthy and looking good.

Things You'll Need

  • Hand pruners

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off dead, diseased, or broken stems as well as dead flowers after the swamp rose is done blooming.

    • 2

Prune the side stems back by one-half to one-third to shape the rose bush.

    • 3

Prune off one stem at the base of the swamp rose bush for every four to five stems left on the plant, to renovate an overgrown shrub.
