Are Ranunculuses or Roses More Expensive?

Roses are commonly grown throughout the U.S. and used extensively in cut flower arrangements. Ranunculuses have more specialized growing requirements and are less common, making them more expensive as cut flowers. To save money, combine them in small amounts with roses in cut arrangements and wedding bouquets.

  1. Garden Plants

    • Roses are usually sold as bare root or potted plants and vary considerably in price. Bare root plants are the most affordable -- often under $10, while larger potted plants may cost $15 or more as of publication time. Ranunculuses are sold as bulbs in sets of 10 to 25. They are fairly inexpensive to buy for the garden, costing less than $10 for 25 bulbs. However, they may require extensive care in Northern climates and may not be long-lived.

    Care

    • Ranunculuses are tender perennials that grow easily in mild, warm climates. In Northern regions, though, they require specialized care, increasing the financial cost, as well as costs of time and maintenance. Roses are usually cold hardy, depending on the type, but they vary widely in maintenance costs. Hybrid roses may need spraying to control pests and diseases, while shrub roses are usually more sturdy.

    Cut Flowers

    • Both ranunculus and roses make long-lasting, durable cut flowers and are common choices for wedding arrangements. Roses are typically less expensive than ranunculuses, although the distributor and time of year may influence final costs.

    Recommendations

    • Plant ranunculuses in flower gardens if you live in a suitable climate. Their papery, multipetaled flowers are lovely in the garden, as well as in cut flower arrangements. In the North, try them only if you are an experienced gardener, willing to spend the additional time and money necessary for success. Roses grow in most parts of the U.S. Select disease-resistant varieties adapted to your area and plant them in full sun. Keep the soil evenly moist and watch for disease and insect pests. For cut flower arrangements and bouquets, use roses to provide bulk, but add a few ranunculuses for detail.
