How to Keep a Rosemary Tree

Rosemary plants are versatile, providing fresh aromas throughout the house, spices for cooking, and as a decoration most suitable during the Christmas season. The small pine needles can be added to recipes including lamb chops and teas while also resembling a miniature Christmas tree that can hold lightweight ornaments. The trees thrive outdoors but need to be protected from freezing temperatures, insects and fungus growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the rosemary plant into a pot with drainage holes on the bottom. Select a pot that is 2 inches larger in diameter than the current pot originally purchased with the plant.

    • 2

Add 10 percent perlite or sand for better drainage to the soil.

    • 3

Water the rosemary plant so that it is moist to the touch. Water regularly so that the soil doesn't dry out. Watering the plant will become less frequent during the winter period.

    • 4

Spray wettable sulfate powder onto the rosemary plant to prevent fungus growth. Place the plant in an area that receives adequate light.

    • 5

Prune any dead or infected branches with pruning shears.

    • 6

Add houseplant fertilizer at half strength every four weeks throughout the spring and summer. Fertilizer is not necessary during the winter since it is a dormant period.

    • 7

Place the plant outdoors in full sun during the spring and summer. Be sure to bring the plant in during the winter or any time the temperature drops below freezing.
