How Much Cold Can Rosemary Plants Take?

Rosemary plants are hardy to zone 6 and will go dormant in cold winters. Young plants will need more care in the winter to prevent freezing, while established plants may require less preparation, depending on the winter climate.
  1. Hardiness Zones

    • Plants classified as hardy to zone 6 are able to survive winters temperatures of between -10 degrees to 0 degrees F, or -23.3 to -17.8 degrees C. Mulching and weather protection may be necessary for colder climates or during harsh winters.

    Container Grown

    • Container grown rosemary can be moved under a covered patio or other covered area to help protect it from harsh winter weather. If moving the plant is not possible, cover the soil with an inch of bark mulch to help insulate the soil. Gently remove snow from the branches if necessary.

    Garden Plants

    • Young plants need to be protected during harsh winters, especially in areas with heavy snow. Well-established plants are able to survive most winter weather. In areas where temperatures drop below -10 degrees F, add a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch, building a mound at the base of the plants.
