How to Grow a Regal Hybrid Calla Lily

Calla lilies are beautiful plants that make wonderful gifts or additions to any home. Regal calla lilies feature a single, striking cylindrical-shaped flower. The color can vary from burgundy to lavender and offsets the yellow stalk. Though calla lilies originally inhabited marshlands and tropical areas, they can flourish in any climate. Due to their beauty and popularity, you can buy them at many plant nurseries for reasonable prices or buy the bulbs to grow from scratch. Given the right conditions, regal hybrid calla lilies will spread rapidly through your garden or remain verdant inside all year.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a 4-inch flowerpot three-quarters of the way with potting mix. Mix in compost until it is an inch or two from the top.

    • 2

Dig a hole in the soil about halfway down and place the bulb on its side. Cover with soil.

    • 3

Water the pot once or twice a week, allowing the soil to dry out a little each time. Be sure that the pot has adequate drainage so that the roots don’t have problems with mold.

    • 4

Place the pot in a window with plenty of sunlight.

    • 5

Water the plant with an all-purpose fertilizer supplement once or twice a month to ensure the plant does not suffer from depleted nutrients. If the soil provides enough nutrition, the plant may flower all year long. Signs of malnutrition include burned leaves (brown or shriveled) or no flowering for long periods.
