How to Grow Clover for Bees

A property full of clover (Trifolium repens) will attract bees. Bees are beneficial insects because they assist in pollinating your flowers. Clover takes little effort to grow and has distinctive heart-shaped leaves. Besides attracting bees, clover is soft to walk on, can cover spots on your property where grass won't grow and is easy to mow, which should be done frequently since the plant's flowers become unattractive once they change to brown.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant clover in the spring and summer for best results. Sow the soil seeds at 2 to 8 oz. per 1,000 square feet, depending on how much clover you want to grow. At 8 oz. per 1,000 feet, clover will be the dominant plant.

    • 2

Rake the soil before and after sowing the clover seeds for better distribution. Combine seeds with sawdust or a low analysis organic fertilizer before spreading to help with distribution. Sow in a place where the clover will receive full sunlight.

    • 3

Add a small layer of mulch to keep moisture in and protect the young clover.

    • 4

Ensure the soil is moist until the clover seedlings begin to establish themselves. Ensure the soil is well drained.

    • 5

Replant seeds depending on if you grow perennial or annual clover. Once established, clover will need little care or maintenance.
