How to Grow Jasmine on a Porch

Jasmine is an easily grown plant that produces sweet-smelling white or yellow flowers, perfect for a beginning gardener. Even if you have limited space, you can grow jasmine in a pot on your porch if you provide it with the proper care. If you do decide to grow a jasmine plant on your porch, be aware that you need to maintain the plant since it can grow out of control. Growing jasmine on a porch does not differ from growing it elsewhere in a pot. In some warmer states, people plant jasmine directly into the ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the pot or planter in a warm spot on your porch where it will receive full sunlight to partial shade. Set up the trellis so its base is inside the pot, a few inches away from where you will put the plant.

    • 2

Fill your planter with potting soil. Choose a planter that drains well.

    • 3

Plant the jasmine plant in the soil. Begin to train the plant by threading its vines in and out of your trellis. Jasmine is a creeping plant and it will stick to the trellis if you train it properly. Thread all the way up to the top of the trellis.

    • 4

Shape the vine in the trellis based on your own aesthetic preference. Thread either one main vine on the trellis or use numerous vines.

    • 5

Water your jasmine plant whenever the soil feels dry. Do not overwater. Jasmine plants do not thrive in soggy standing water.

    • 6

Cut back your jasmine plant after the blooming season. Trim any vines that grow taller than the trellis and remove any excessive growth.
