How to Make a Trellis for Philodendron

Low-maintenance philodendrons may be grown easily indoors or out. Because philodendrons tolerate low light situations and grow well in containers, they are common houseplants. When given support, philodendrons will grow and vine upward, wrapping around the structure. Philodendrons do not need elaborate trellis systems to get the support they need; gardeners may grow vining philodendrons with little more than wooden stakes placed nearby.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for philodendrons to begin growing and leaf out. You want to give the plant room to get established before placing the stakes.

    • 2

Wrap a 1-foot wooden or metal stake with sphagnum moss.

    • 3

Drive the stake 3 to 4 inches away from the clump of philodendron growth, 3 to 4 inches into the soil. Place the stake in the same pot with the philodendron when the plant is container-grown.

    • 4

Prune the philodendron when it grows too tall and begins to drape over the stake. Leaves and thick growth may need to be pruned around the stake as well as the plant grows.

    • 5

Place one stake per plant to give philodendrons support. A single stake is enough support for the plant, but gardeners may place a second stake 2 to 3 inches away from the first to encourage fuller, bushier plant growth.
