How to Germinate a Carolina Sweetbush

Carolina Sweet Bush goes by many different names, including Carolina Allspice, Strawberry Shrub, Sweet Shrub, Sweet Betsy and Florida Spice Bush. Whatever you choose to call it, it gives off the same fruity scent, which may remind you of strawberries and bananas, and blooms maroon or bronze flowers. As you might guess, it's native to the southeastern U.S., so it grows best in warmer climates. Germinating Carolina Sweet Bush is straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a 4-inch-deep hole in your garden that is partially or fully shaded. Dig the hole in mid-spring or early summer.

    • 2

Place the Carolina Sweet Bush seed in the hole. If you're growing more than one bush, space the holes about 6 feet apart.

    • 3

Cover the hole with dirt and a 1-inch layer of top soil.

    • 4

Water the seed once a week with about 1 inch of water.

    • 5

Monitor the shrub as it grows and keep the shrub area clear of weeds and other obstructions that could prevent it from sprouting.
